Walkathon at India Gate on Elders Day 2011

The Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi organized Walkathon at India Gate on the occasion of International EldersDay on 01st October 2011 in association with Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India, New Delhi and Helpage India in which more than 3500 senior citizens participated after coming from different parts of Delhi. Shri Mathew Cherian, CEO, Helpage India; and Shri J.R. Gupta, Chairperson, Confederation of Senior Citizens Associations of Delhi escorted the Hon'ble Minister for flagging off the Walkathon. Hon'ble Shri Mukul Wasnik, Union minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India flagged off the Walkathon. The main aim of this Walkathon was to have a better coordination and confidence among Govt. and senior citizens for the cause and care of elderly. In his inaugural address, Hon'ble Minister announced that New Policy for Older Persons is being finalized and will be announced in due course after consulting with the concerned Ministries for extending health, social and financial security to senior citizen particularly those 80+. On this occasion, Shri J.R. Gupta, demanded setting up of a National Commission for Senior Citizens like National Commission for Women so that their grievances could be solved at one place. Further, he requested Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi to fulfill her assurance given on 05th February 2011 in the Conference of Senior Citizens at NCUI Auditorium for issue of Senior Citizens Cards.
